Mets 'wiping the financial ledger' ahead of major front-office move?

Former Milwaukee Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns has been linked to the New York Mets for quite some time now. Talks regarding a potential contract are unable to occur during the season, but several reports have indicated that he is expected to head to the Big Apple during the offseason.

At the time of this publication the 2023 MLB trade deadline is a few hours away. Already the Mets have traded away Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Eduardo Escobar, David Roberston and Mark Canha. Per USA Today's Bob Nightengale, all of this is in an attempt to clear the financial ledger prior to Stearns taking over.

Scherzer and Verlander were on two huge deals and now are on contending American League teams. Despite them no longer being with the Mets, New York did agree to pay a significant portion of their remaining salaries.

In a sense, whether Stearns does take the job in New York or not, this does help clear up the financial ledger prior to the offseason. The Mets are now in a mini rebuild with the intention of being competitive again in 2025. This is a situation that Stearns has found himself in before, and he could very well once again have an opportunity to lead a rebuild, but this time with an unlimited payroll.
