Antonio Browns' Steelers Teammate Doesn't Agree With #84 Going To Cordarrelle Patterson: 'I Don’t Love That'
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers witnessed one of the most extraordinary offensive bursts during their nine seasons with star wide receiver Antonio Brown. Despite his incredible on-field performance, Brown's off-field actions and departure from the organization left many with a sour taste. Regardless of personal opinions on Brown as a person and his recent conduct, one cannot deny his impact during his time with the Steelers. Amassing 837 receptions, 11,207 receiving yards, and 74 touchdowns, Brown's legacy is firmly established in Steelers' history.

Upon the announcement of the electrifying kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson joining the team, speculation arose regarding his jersey number. With Patterson having worn 84 throughout his career, fans wondered if he would inherit Brown's former number. While the Steelers have retired only three numbers in their history, some hold a sacred status and are not reassigned. Surprisingly, 84 was not among them.

Former Steelers linebacker Terence Garvin recently shared his thoughts on the team's decision to allow Patterson to wear the number during an appearance on Arthur Moats' podcast, The Arthur Moats Experience.

“Nah, I wouldn’t have given that 84 away. That’s still 84. You know what I mean? That’s AB 84. Best wide receiver in the league for multiple years. Never forget. I know the relationship went bad, but that’s still the best receiver in the league for multiple years.”

Moats and Garvin engaged in a lively discussion, reminiscing about the remarkable moments they shared with Brown during his tenure in Pittsburgh. As they delved into the topic, they recounted some of the unforgettable experiences they had while playing alongside Brown. Despite Brown's controversial exit from the NFL, marked by his abrupt departure from a game, Moats maintained that Brown's issues were not as pronounced during his time with the Steelers.

Garvin concurred with Moats' perspective, emphasizing his disbelief at the notion of allowing another player to don the number 84. To Garvin, the significance of the number seven, worn by Ben Roethlisberger, holds a comparable weight. He suggested that both numbers should never be worn again.

“I just don’t think they should have done that. I don’t love that he’s putting the 84 on his back.”

While the debate between the significance of the numbers seven and 84 may not resonate with everyone, the notion of preserving Brown's number carries more weight, albeit with some contention. Yet, for many Steelers fans, the sentiment is clear: Brown's tumultuous departure, which included public criticism of the organization and his former quarterback, left a lasting impression.

Had Brown exited the Steelers with dignity, it's probable that his number would remain untouchable. However, his tenure in Pittsburgh was undeniably exceptional, leaving fans to ponder what might have been had he remained a Steeler for life, unimpeded by personal turmoil.

Steelers Put A Target On Cordarrelle Patterson's Back Allowing Him To Wear 84

As the debate continued regarding the significance of jersey numbers within the organization, Moats raised a concern about the repercussions of allowing Patterson to wear Brown's former number. Despite Brown's occasional erratic behavior, he possesses a keen intellect, leveraging social media to maintain a prominent presence long after his playing days.

Moats emphasized Brown's adeptness at social media branding, noting his knack for garnering attention and stirring controversy. With Patterson now donning the number 84, Moats speculated that he could become a target for Brown's social media tirades, reminiscent of Brown's criticism of JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Looking ahead, it will be intriguing to observe Patterson's performance while wearing the iconic number in Pittsburgh. With the evolution of kickoff rules and the addition of a dynamic return specialist like Patterson, the Steelers have bolstered their special teams unit, sparking excitement among fans. As the 2024 season unfolds, Steelers supporters eagerly anticipate a formidable presence on both punt and kickoff returns, hoping to instill fear in opposing teams.
